Part one – Stress and tension

At The Neuromuscular Studio, we see many many clients who have frequent headaches – everything from stress-induced tension headaches to injury-related whiplash headaches to debilitating chronic migraines. I recently attended a workshop at Chandler Physical Therapy where Eric Christensen, DPT reminded me of a few things about headaches. I’d like to share them with you. Today we will talk quickly about stress headaches:
Stress headaches usually come from trigger points in the trapezius, levator and subocciputals muscles. The trigger points in these muscles refer pain in the temple, forehead and the back of the head or base of the skull. Its a dull, aching, always-there pain.
Treating the trigger points with Neuromuscular Therapy techniques will help to cut the referral pain cycle, and also decrease the muscle tension. Once you feel that your muscles are looser and your headache is lessening, you can breathe easier and your feeling of stress goes down. Scheduling your session is as easy as clicking here!
Other options for decreasing your stress and tension:
Using a hot pack to loosen your trapezius and decrease neck tension. We like the TheraPearl Neck Wrap. You can microwave it for a few seconds to create a warming feel on your shoulders while you are working, or resting.
Using a topical analgesic to decrease tension in the muscle. If you are experiencing tension between sessions, we like Cryoderm (arnica and botanicals) or Sombra Warm Therapy (menthol, wintergreen and orange).
Reducing your stress and breathe easier with essential oils. We like lavender and the blends we carry called Stress Relief and Head Ease.
Headaches are one of the most common complaints of the client we treat. There are solutions for different kinds. We will post info about other types also!
